There are always misconceptions when thinking of the term “club-wear.” Women, mostly, have these strange ideas that club-wear often means “prostitution wear.”

Definite DON'Ts

Definite DON'Ts

My friends and I were standing in a line to enter a Los Angeles club, and to forget about the 50 degree weather, we engaged in the art form of people watching. What we witnessed were things that no one should ever in their lives have to witness.

To start off, ladies, I’m not sure who told you that a tight tank top can substitute as a mini dress. Just because it ends right under your buttocks, doesn’t mean you should be wearing it outside of your bedroom. Even if you have a model’s body, insane legs, and a size 0 waist, no one should leave their house in something that doesn’t come to at least six inches under their buttocks.

If you have an amazing body that you want to show off, do it with class. Men don’t want a girl who shows everything off to everyone; they want you somewhat covered up, so when they do see a little bit of extra skin, they know they’re special.

Now for the ladies who have more to love, it’s okay if you want to wear a fun short dress to show off your legs, but there are always ways you can do so without everything hanging out. To begin with, you can always throw on some sexy leggings under a mini dress. The shape of your lovely legs are still visible, but everything is tucked away.

This goes to women of all shapes and sizes: if you have great legs, you can forget the leggings; however, don’t forget to cover up at the top. We don’t want your ladies spilling all over the dance floor. Also for all women, don’t wear clothes that are too tight. If you think you look thin from the front, chances are, there are exposed rolls in the back. You don’t want to wear something that’s two sizes too small. It’s completely fine if you get that ultra cute blazer in a large. As long as it fits properly, you will feel and look good.

Moving on from showing too much, don’t cover everything up! You’re not going to a Sunday dinner at your grandmother’s house; you’re going to a club, make it sexy! Show something, whether it be your arms, shoulders, legs, or chest (in an appropriate manner). Know what your best asset is and emphasize it! If you love the definition in your shoulders and arms, wear a strapless or halter. If you love your legs, go with a mini dress. If you love your buttocks, wear a slightly longer, but tighter skirt/dress. And if you must show off your chest, wear a V-neck, but make sure the ladies stay in place. Do not wear a midriff top, regardless of how many hours you put in the gym. This is 2009, not 1996.

Clubs usually tolerate women wearing jeans. Even if they allow it, doesn’t mean you should be wearing it. Women wear blue jeans to the grocery store, the mall, to get their hair done, and pretty much everywhere else imaginable. So when women are getting ready to go dancing at a night club, they should not be wearing the same thing. Jeans are tasteless and tacky for a club setting. You should be in a skirt or a dress, and if you must wear jeans, wear black jeans, but make sure they’re skinny jeans. No one wears flare anymore, and boot cut is pushing it.

At the end of the day, going to a club is all about dressing fun and fabulous. You want to look your best and have a great time with whomever you decide to go with. Whatever you decide to put on should make you feel confident and sexy. Don’t show too much, but don’t hide the goods. There is a balance to everything. Oh and one more thing, wearing leggings/spandex as pants is a privilege, not a right.
